This morning Ewan chatted with Yvonne Agars, who made the front page 50 years ago as the first female teller in Australia.
Yvonne explained to Ewan that she had worked for the Commonwealth bank for 4 years before they decided to open up more opportunities for women. After Yvonne was suggested, she became the first female teller in the country.
Well it was a surprise, and I was quite young, and I was quite embarrassed. But looking back I guess it was a big thing… for women.
- Yvonne Agars
Yvonne told Ewan that at first her male colleagues gave her a hard time about the position, and at the time women were required to leave the workforce after being married, which Yvonne was 2 years later. She then took up work in accounts after raising her 4 children.
